‘Don’t take your husband and three kids’: Anglo-Indian politician criticizes Palestinian student for seeking funds to bring family to London

British Indian politician Suella Braverman sparked a controversy after responding to a student’s request to bring her family to the UK to attend university. Braverman posted on X, “You don’t need to bring your husband and three kids to get a degree in media studies. Universities need to stop selling immigration instead of education. Her comments were in response to a fundraising post by Alaa Radwan, who is originally from Palestine and whose family is seeking around £17,000 to cover visa and education costs, including those for her husband and three children, after receiving an unconditional offer to study for a master’s degree in media and communication studies at Goldsmiths, University of London, starting in September 2026, according to her CV.Radwan’s post outlined basic costs such as a visa application fee of £524 per person, an immigration health surcharge of £776 per person and tuition fees, describing the move as a “lifeline for my family”.Braverman was born in Harrow, London, to Indian parents and has long served in the British government. She has previously been involved in discussions to reduce net migration and tighten rules on family visas for overseas students. She also served as former Home Secretary.Social media users have acknowledged that Braverman herself has immigrant roots and brought her parents to the UK. One user said: “This is the same system your parents and whole family exploited. Jumping from one political party to another has obviously fried your brain.”Another said: “Tell us Suella, why did your parents immigrate to the UK in the 60s?”A third added: “Have you ever said to your dad, Dad, you don’t need to take my mum and us away?”
