President of the United States Donald Trump In an interview with NBC News on Sunday, he described Iranians as “crazy” and “crazy people” while defending his tough approach to Tehran and insisting that Washington must prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.Speaking in an interview with NBC News Meet the mediaTrump said the United States was taking action to prevent a global catastrophe.“I have to stop a very powerful, very dangerous country from having nuclear weapons, because they’re going to use them. They’re going to blow up the world. They’re going to blow up the Middle East. They’re going to blow up Israel. They’re going to come here. They’re going to blow up Europe,” Trump said.He added, “They’re crazy, okay? They’re crazy. I deal with them.” There are also very nervous people. A little crazy. “Despite his remarks, Trump also said he personally “likes” the Iranians and views U.S. policy as a protective measure.“And get along with them. I like them. But you don’t want them to have nuclear weapons,” he said. “I’m serving the world, but I’m also serving our country, you know? This is America First. I’m serving our country.”
The comments came as Trump outlined what he said was possible progress toward a deal with Tehran over its nuclear program.Trump said that if an agreement is reached, the United States can cooperate with Iran to recover and destroy highly enriched uranium, or take unilateral actions to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities.“If we make an amicable agreement, we’re going to come together. It’s going to be our equipment. We’re going to take it out and destroy it,” Trump said in the interview. He added that if negotiations failed, the United States would respond “very harshly” through military action.Trump also said that Iran had made concessions in the negotiations.“They have admitted that they will not have nuclear weapons,” he said, adding that the two sides were “very close” to an agreement.
Trump described a two-track approach that would combine negotiations with military deterrence, saying U.S. troops would likely remain in the region until the issue was resolved. He also reiterated that Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities have been significantly weakened.“We have completely destroyed their military,” he said, while acknowledging that Iran still retains missiles and drones.Trump said U.S. surveillance capabilities, including “space cameras,” were used to monitor the development of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. The interview comes amid ongoing conflict-related tensions in the region, including ongoing U.S.-Iran hostilities and broader instability in West Asia following strikes and counterattacks between Iran, Israel and U.S. forces.Trump has consistently argued that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, linking the issue to regional security concerns involving Israel, Europe and the United States.Despite the sharp rhetoric, Trump said he still saw a path forward for diplomacy and suggested a deal could bring broader stability and economic benefits.“We cannot allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. It cannot be done. We will not do it,” he said.
