Devonta Lee, former LSU Tigers standout wide receiver Louisiana Tech Bulldogs has died, his mother confirmed. Lee suffered from osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. He was only 27 years old at the time.
DeVonta Lee’s mother Laksia Brown confirmed his death, KTVE reports die in emotional messages about him. Brown also confirmed he has cancer.
“He was a fighter and he loved everybody,” she said. She described herself as a “good kid” who would “do anything for anyone.” “He gives it his all in everything he does,” she added, noting that despite having cancer, he still “works out every day.” Brown called Lee “a very hard-working, focused player” who “never gave up in football.”
In 2022, shortly after joining Louisiana Tech, Lee was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer. He reportedly underwent “two surgeries, ten weeks of chemotherapy and seven weeks of radiation” while battling the disease.
Lee played for LSU from 2019 to 2021 and was a member of the team that won the 2019 national championship. He played wide receiver in that championship game. He later transferred to Louisiana Tech, where he played three games in two seasons.
Lee finished his college career with 13 catches for 129 yards and one touchdown while attending LSU and Louisiana Tech.
LSU paid tribute to Lee on the X, saying: “The LSU football family mourns the passing of former Tiger DeVonta Lee. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates.”
Louisiana Tech’s football account also paid tribute, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Bulldogs wide receiver Devonta Lee.”
“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and former teammates during this difficult time. He will forever be remembered as a member of the Bulldog family,” the statement read.
