NEW DELHI: Distribution companies in Mumbai, Delhi and Noida emerged as the best performers in 2024-25 among all power companies surveyed by the Power Ministry.Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd (AEML), Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL) and Uttar Pradesh Noida Power Ltd (NPCL) topped the distribution utility rankings. Dakshini Gujarat Vij Company Limited and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport ranked fourth and fifth respectively.Delhi’s three power companies – BSES Rajdhani, BSES Yamuna and TPDDL – remain top in the consumer service ratings of power distribution companies, followed by Adani Power Mumbai Ltd and Tata Power Ltd (Maharashtra).Both reports were launched on Friday at the Bharat Power Summit 2026.Although there are 76 state-owned and private power companies in the country, 66 were assessed in the two surveys and the remaining 10 failed to submit required documents. In the CSRD report, distributors are divided into six different categories based on their response to customers. Switchboards are evaluated on four parameters: operational reliability; metering, billing and charging; error correction and grievance redressal; and connectivity and other services.The performance of 6 discotheques was rated A+, 21 were rated A and 27 were rated B+. There are 10 pieces in Category B, and 1 piece each in Category C+ and C. No discom is classified as D in the rating.“The purpose of this grading is to stimulate healthy competition and encourage continuous improvement in service quality,” the government said in a statement.The CSRD report aims to develop a comprehensive strategy to improve consumer satisfaction and promote interdisciplinary learning, officials said. “It examines a range of consumer-centric services, using the service standards of the electricity rules to assess distribution companies in key areas and monitor and evaluate their compliance and implementation of these rules,” an official said.The power distribution enterprise ranking report uses a multi-dimensional evaluation framework such as institutional capabilities, financial sustainability, operational efficiency, and service delivery results to conduct a comprehensive and objective assessment of the performance of power distribution enterprises.Officials said the survey, which is conducted annually, also takes record labels’ past performance into account when formulating the final rankings. The report shows how distribution companies fared in the last assessment, whether their performance has improved, and whether the utilities moved up or down the rankings compared to the last survey.
