Delhi govt to set up high-tech labs at four ITIs soon: CM Rekha Gupta

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday announced a comprehensive initiative to strengthen technical and vocational education in the capital’s Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). According to the Office of the Chief Minister of Delhi, under this initiative in the area of skill development, new state-of-the-art laboratories will be set up at four ITIs in the national capital and existing laboratories will be modernized to ensure that training is fully compliant with current industry standards and requirements. The move aims to significantly improve employability and technical proficiency. ITI Jahangirpuri will set up a dedicated power electronics laboratory to provide advanced training in power electronics, electrical control systems, industrial automation and renewable energy. It will be equipped with modern systems such as programmable logic controller (PLC) kits, variable frequency drive (VFD) trainers, transformer trainers, motor control panels, relays and protection systems, solar photovoltaic training kits and smart energy monitoring systems. This laboratory will provide participants with hands-on experience in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining modern electrical and power electronics systems. It is expected to develop into a center of excellence in the field of power engineering, closely aligning training with industry requirements. Trainees from trades such as electricians, electronic mechanics, automotive electrical and electronic mechanics (MAEE), solar technicians, assemblers, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics (MRAC) and motor vehicle mechanics (MMV) will benefit. A total of 480 trainees can receive training in these industries. The existing welding laboratory at ITI Jail Road (Hari Nagar) will be fully upgraded, the release said. The modern facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art welding machines, simulation-based training systems and modern manufacturing tools to provide trainees with real-world exposure to industrial welding processes. “The upgraded lab will also include arc welding, MIG/TIG welding, gas cutting, plasma cutting, welding simulators and metal fabrication workstations. This will help trainees improve precision, enhance safety awareness and develop industry-relevant manufacturing skills. “ The move is also expected to expand apprenticeship and employment opportunities, while transforming the facility into a state-of-the-art welding training center that meets modern manufacturing standards. About 200 trainees from trades such as welders, fitters, lathes, mechanics, motor vehicle and sheet metal workers will benefit. The automotive laboratory at ITI Arab Ki Sarai (Nizamuddin) will also be upgraded with cutting-edge technology. A major highlight is the introduction of high-end virtual reality (VR) simulators for driving, welding and spray painting training. These simulators will enable trainees to learn complex skills in a safe, controlled and highly realistic environment. In addition, dedicated modules for advanced vehicle systems such as anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and airbags will be launched. This will enable trainees to develop practical expertise in diagnosing and repairing modern electronic automotive systems, the release said. The upgrade is expected to transform the institute into a state-of-the-art center of excellence and significantly enhance employability. A total of 208 trainees from the Auto Body Painting Mechanic (MABP) and Auto Body Mechanical Repair (MABR) trades will benefit. To further strengthen the green mobility ecosystem, an electric vehicle (EV) laboratory will be set up at HJB ITI, Mayur Vihar, the release said. The lab will focus on next-generation automotive technologies, including battery management systems (BMS), electric motors, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and power electronics diagnostics. Participants will gain hands-on experience in electric vehicle assembly, testing, diagnostics and repair, as well as develop skills relevant to the rapidly growing clean transportation sector. About 184 trainees from electronic machinery, mechatronics technicians and related disciplines will benefit. The chief minister said the initiative marks a major step in building a skilled and industry-ready workforce. “These modern laboratories not only enhance technical skills but also expose trainees to real-world industrial practice, providing opportunities for employment and self-employment,” she said. She added that the move is in line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of ‘Skill India’ and technological empowerment of the youth, contributing to economic growth and self-reliance. ITI Jahangirpuri is located in northwest Delhi. The institute is affiliated to the Directorate of Training and Technical Education (DTTE) and provides training in the electrical, electronics and mechanical trades. Its proximity to industry clusters makes it ideal for hands-on learning.
