CNN anchor apologizes for calling New York City bombs an attack on Mayor Zohran Mamdani

CNN anchor Abby Phillip has issued an apology after sparking major controversy after suggesting last Saturday’s ISIS-inspired attack in New York City was an attack on Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani. “After two Republicans said Muslims didn’t belong here after the attempted terrorist attack on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, House Speaker Mike Johnson had virtually nothing to condemn those comments,” Philip said, referring to Andy Ogles and Randy Fine. Investigators said the attack targeted anti-Islam protesters outside the Mamdani Gracie Building. Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, were charged with providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization and using weapons of mass destruction. Both of them are U.S. citizens. “I would like to correct something I said last night. The bombs dropped in New York City over the weekend were thrown by attackers inspired by ISIS into a crowd of anti-Muslim protesters and not specifically targeted at Mayor Mamdani. The wording was inaccurate and I did not catch it ahead of time. I apologize for the error,” Philippe corrected. CNN is in hot water over the New York attack as they had to remove a social media post that described the attacker as a “teenager” enjoying the New York weather. “Two Pennsylvania teenagers entered New York City on Saturday morning and spent a normal day enjoying the city in unseasonably warm weather,” the now-deleted post read. “But within an hour, their lives would change dramatically when the pair were arrested for throwing homemade bombs during an anti-Muslim protest outside Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s home. Here’s what we know so far.”CNN issued a clarification saying the post had been deleted because it failed to reflect the seriousness of the incident. CNN said: “A post about two people arrested for throwing a homemade bomb outside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s home violated the editorial standards required of all our reporting by failing to reflect the seriousness of the incident. As a result, the post has been removed.”
