Chickpeas grow in lunar soil: Can chickpeas grow in lunar soil? New research reveals surprising results of space farming

As the United States plans long-duration lunar missions under the Artemis program, one of the biggest challenges facing scientists is what astronauts will eat in space. This challenge has prompted researchers to explore whether materials on the moon could be used directly to grow crops.A recent study led by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University takes an important step toward that goal.In research published in the journal Scientific Reports, scientists successfully grew and harvested chickpeas in simulated “lunar dirt,” also known as a lunar regolith simulant. Sara Santos, the project’s lead researcher, said the work is an important step toward understanding what food can be grown on the moon and what future lunar explorers can eat.

How scientists grew chickpeas in simulated lunar soil

Researchers at Texas A&M University and University of Texas at Austin Use lunar regolith simulants or simulated lunar soil to test whether crops can grow on the moon. The material is designed to replicate the chemical composition and physical structure of lunar soil.Unlike the composition of Earth’s soil, lunar regolith lacks organic matter, microorganisms or nutrients needed for plant growth. To create an environment conducive to growing plants, components of the lunar soil are mixed with organic compost called vermicompost, a byproduct of earthworms. The composition of the chickpea plant is also influenced by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, which are beneficial microorganisms that help the plant obtain necessary nutrients while fending off adverse conditions.Several components of the soil mix were tested and the results showed that chickpea plants were able to thrive in the moon components when organically composted.

Why choose chickpeas space agriculture

Chickpeas were chosen for space farming because of the high nutritional value they provide to astronauts. Chickpeas are rich in plant protein, fiber, and vitamins like iron and folate.Chickpeas are also known for their ability to grow in dry environments. They are typically grown in semi-arid areas and can tolerate water stress and harsh conditions.Chickpeas are also legumes. Beans interact with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the roots. This biological process converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form that plants can absorb and contributes to soil fertility.

What these findings mean for future lunar missions

Growing chickpeas in simulated lunar soil provides data relevant to space exploration, particularly missions that NASA plans to send in the near future under the Artemis program. In order for astronauts to stay on the moon for longer periods of time, the ability to produce their own food should be implemented. This research shows that plants can survive in lunar soil using organic materials and microorganisms.Although research shows that plants can survive in lunar soil, the soil contains certain ingredients that are not conducive to plant survival.Additionally, the moon has no atmosphere, stable temperatures, or natural water. However, future focus should be on developing and implementing controlled agricultural practices, such as greenhouses, that will be able to provide the necessary conditions for plant survival in lunar soil.
