New Delhi: Defense minister stresses need for strong infrastructure in border areas Rajnath Singh The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has been entrusted with developing infrastructure along the India-Myanmar border, covering a total length of about 1,600 kilometers, a move that will further enhance border management capabilities, it said on Wednesday.Rajnath, who chaired a meeting of the Defense Ministry’s Parliamentary Advisory Committee on BRO on Wednesday, said that through the network, round-the-clock connectivity will be ensured even in remote and high-altitude areas, thereby enhancing operational mobility and defense preparedness. Also discussed during the meeting was progress on the Border Roads Development Plan 2023-28, which is executing over 1,000 road and infrastructure projects, including new construction, upgrades and maintenance works, to further enhance border connectivity.
The minister also appreciated BRO’s efforts in strengthening connectivity in the Northeast and left-wing extremism-affected areas, thereby contributing to security and regional development. “BRO promotes the mobility of the defense forces and strives to bring about a positive transformation in the lives of the residents,” he said. The meeting held insightful deliberations on issues such as defence, infrastructure development and ongoing strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing national security and operational readiness.Drawing the attention of the members of the Parliamentary Advisory Committee on the key aspect of “utilization of technology”, the minister said the BRO was rapidly adopting modern construction techniques by making full use of technologies such as aerial equipment, modular bridges and prefabricated technology.“BRO has improved the quality and speed of work. This shows that we are building infrastructure for the future,” he said. He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the BRO in terms of budgetary support, modernized equipment and initiatives aimed at improving personnel welfare. Established in 1960, BRO has built more than 64,000 kilometers of roads, 1,179 bridges, 22 airports and 7 tunnels, greatly improving operational readiness and socio-economic development in border areas.
