Assam polls: Congress finalizes candidates for 40 seats; Gaurav Gogoi likely to contest from Jorhat

New Delhi: congress Lok Sabha leader and deputy leader of the party Gaurav Gogoi is likely to contest the upcoming Assam Assembly elections from Jorhat constituency, news agency ANI reported, citing party sources.Meanwhile, the Grand Old Party finalized its candidates for as many as 40 seats at a Central Election Committee meeting held on Friday. “Congress will announce the first list of candidates after the election results are announced,” the source said.

Gogoi is currently serving as Member of Parliament from the prestigious Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency in Assam. In the 2023 general elections, Gogoi, who is also the Congress president in Assam, defeated Topon Kumar Gogoi.Gaurav got 7,51,771 votes while Topon got 6,07,378 votes, thus winning by a margin of 1,44,393 votes.As a parliamentarian, Gogoi came into the spotlight after he initiated a no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government in August 2023.Although Gaurav has been an outspoken opponent of the BJP government inside and outside the House, he came to the limelight after he initiated a no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government in August last year. His speech caused an immediate sensation, especially among young people.regarded as confidant Rahul GandhiGogoi has served as a member of various house committees such as the Standing Committee on Railways, the Consultative Committee on the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and the Committee on Violations of Codes of Decoration by Members of the Lok Sabha and Contemptuous Conduct by Government Officials.Assam will hold assembly elections later this year, with the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, aiming to retain power while facing a new challenge from the Congress party.
