Artemis 2 astronauts observe the moon during flyby; NASA shares images |

NASA’s Artemis 2 mission has taken a major step in its flight program, taking astronauts to the closest point to the moon, a mission last accomplished during the Apollo 17 mission. Although there was no landing during the mission, the goal was to test space systems and conduct observations during the seven-hour flight near the moon. The mission had some tangible achievements, such as setting a new record for the farthest distance traveled by an astronaut. Observations of the far side of the moon, solar eclipses, and unique events occurring on the lunar surface were also made.

NASA’s Artemis 2 Fly over the moon Revealing detailed view of the far side of the moon

While in lunar orbit, astronauts conducted thorough observations of the area. It was discovered that the far side of the moon has dense craters, solidified lava fields and geological fissures. Changes in brightness and texture have been observed, which are useful in understanding changes in surface composition. The information gathered is considered useful for future missions, especially in the search for suitable locations. Additionally, the crew observed groundfall and groundrise phenomena.

Artemis 2 flies by moon to capture solar eclipse and rare Meteoroid impact flash

A solar eclipse occurs during an observation window when the spacecraft, moon, and sun align. The event lasted nearly an hour and allowed crews to observe the corona in conditions that partially blocked sunlight.During the same period, six flashes were observed on the lunar surface. These flashes are consistent with meteoroid impacts, which occur when space debris hits the moon at high speeds. While such effects are known, direct observations from manned spacecraft are limited. The recorded flashes will be analyzed along with imaging data to determine their exact timing and location.

NASA Artemis II live coverage includes crew interaction with Donald Trump

After the lunar observation period ended, the crew participated in a live broadcast organized by NASA. During the meeting, President Donald Trump spoke with the astronauts and acknowledged the mission’s progress. The crew also interacted with Jared Isaacman to discuss various aspects of the flyby and onboard observations. Questions submitted via social media were addressed during the broadcast and formed part of the delegation’s public communications efforts. Interaction occurs after the communication link is fully restored.

Orion spacecraft Signal lost for 40 minutes during moon flyby mission

As Orion moved behind the moon, communications with mission control were temporarily interrupted. The blackout lasted about 40 minutes and occurred because the moon blocked direct radio signals between the spacecraft and Earth.During this phase, the spacecraft reached its closest approach to the lunar surface at approximately 4,067 miles. At around 7:00 p.m., Orion passed the far side and continued on its path. During the communications gap, all spaceborne systems operated as expected, and contact was restored once the spacecraft reappeared from behind the moon.

NASA Artemis II flyby data sent to Earth to support future moon landings

Data collected during the Artemis 2 flyby is currently being transmitted to Earth for detailed examination. This includes images, recorded observations and spacecraft telemetry. The science team is expected to review these materials to refine models related to lunar geology and mission operations. There are also plans to compare the observed impact flashes with independent observations by Earth observers. This may help verify the timing and nature of events recorded during the mission.
