An Indian doctor shares his experience in the British driving test and calls the system “strict but necessary”

An Indian-origin doctor has shared her experience of obtaining a driving license in the UK, saying the process was much stricter than in India.Sunita Sayammagaru wrote in a post on X that while getting a driving license in India feels relatively easy, the UK system requires a higher level of skill and awareness.She said she already had an Indian driving license when she moved to the UK in 2007, but soon realized her driving was not up to par.“I realized how pathetic the way I was driving was,” she wrote, adding that she hadn’t learned most of what British drivers were expected to know.According to her post, the UK driving licensing process consists of a theory and practical test, with candidates being rigorously assessed on multiple aspects of driving.She described how examiners check for mirror usage, lane discipline, indicators, parking techniques, speed control and the ability to navigate complex circles.On her first try, she failed the practical test.She said the examiner pointed out one major error – not completing a full mirror and shoulder check before exiting the roundabout – despite the driving being otherwise acceptable.“He said the rest of my driving time was fine and that he was strict with me, but it was for my own good,” she wrote.Two weeks later she reapplied for the exam and was assessed again by the same examiner, which she said made her nervous.However, on her second try, she passed.Sayammagaru also noted that several Indian drivers she knew had repeatedly failed the British test despite having years of driving experience at home.“It’s just that strict,” she said.Despite the difficulties, she believes such standards are necessary.“Driving license tests should be rigorous. This keeps yourself and others safe,” she wrote.Her post has since resonated with many users online, some of whom agreed that stricter testing could lead to safer roads.
