The Allahabad High Court quashed an FIR against a young couple from Saharanpur who got married consensually, saying the police “caused great harm by registering such FIR and more importantly, by pursuing the young couple and sometimes with ulterior motives forcibly separating them and returning the bride to her parents or her family members.”“ It said “these actions are unlawful and some are criminal”. Expressing strong displeasure over this disturbing trend, the court directed the UP DGP to take remedial action. The court also issued an injunction against the respondents, including the girl’s father, not to enter the matrimonial home of the petitioner.
