South Carolina Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned disgraced lawyer’s murder conviction and life sentence Alex Murdough His wife and young son were shot dead. In their unanimous ruling, the justices quoted the court clerk Becky Hill “A serious attack on Murdaugh’s credibility” by suggesting to jurors that his testimony was not credible. They also said the trial judge went too far in allowing evidence of Murdo’s financial crimes in his murder trial.
But Murdough will not be released from prison. The 57-year-old is currently serving a 40-year federal sentence after admitting to stealing approximately $12 million from clients.
Court clerk Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors in a high-profile South Carolina case, a court said. “While we understand the time, money and effort involved in this lengthy trial, due to Hill’s undue outside influence on the jury, we have no choice but to overturn the denial of Murdo’s motion for a new trial and demand a new trial,” the judges said.
Murdaugh was previously convicted of the June 2021 shooting deaths of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and their youngest son, Paul Murdaugh, at the family estate.
Hill served as the Colleton County Clerk of Court during the murder trial. Prosecutors and defense attorneys later accused her of using the case to build her reputation and financial opportunities. She ultimately pleaded guilty to four state charges related to obstruction of justice, perjury and misconduct in office.
Authorities said Hill improperly shared photos of sealed evidence with members of the media while also using his position to write a book centered on Murdaugh’s murder.
Her book, “Behind the Gates of Justice: The Murdeau Murder Case,” was published five months after Murdough’s conviction.
Hill resigned from office on March 25, 2024, as investigations into Hill’s conduct intensified in multiple states.
In December 2025, she was sentenced to three years’ probation and ordered to complete 100 hours of community service.
Murdaugh’s defense team argued throughout the appeal that Hill tried to improperly steer jurors toward a guilty verdict.
Attorneys Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin claimed Hill maintained inappropriate communications with jury members, including multiple interactions with the jury foreman.
They claim Hill “frequently had private conversations with the jury foreman.”
“Ms. Hill did these things to secure a book deal and media appearances for herself that would not have occurred if the trial had failed,” the attorneys argued. “For money and reputation, Hill betrayed her oath of office.”
During post-conviction hearings, all 12 jurors in the original murder trial were questioned about Hill’s alleged comments and actions. One juror acknowledged that Hill’s comments affected her decision-making process. Two other people testified that they heard Hill discuss the trial, and Murdaugh himself testified, though both said those statements ultimately did not affect their verdicts.
The remaining nine jurors denied hearing any inappropriate comments from Hill.
The ruling now plunges one of the nation’s most high-profile murder cases back into legal uncertainty, with a retrial date still unclear.
Although the conviction was overturned, Murdaugh will not be released from prison.
The disgraced former lawyer is currently serving a 40-year solitary sentence for numerous financial crimes related to fraud and theft charges involving clients and colleagues.
The retrial will determine whether prosecutors can convict Maggie and Paul Murdaugh again in the murders without letting the controversy surrounding Hill cloud the proceedings.
