After Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, another US president is embroiled in the Epstein scandal

this Jeffrey Epstein The saga has once again reached the highest levels of US politics, linking former President George W. Bush to questions about the justice system’s controversial handling of pedophiles.A new report in the Miami Herald by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Julie K. Brown suggests that senior Bush administration Department of Justice (DOJ) officials may have played a role in decisions that allowed Epstein to avoid more serious federal prosecution in the mid-2000s.The report centers on former Palm Beach Police Chief Michael Leiter, who launched the first major criminal investigation into Epstein. Wright and his team spent months gathering evidence. They interviewed victims and made strong accusations against Epstein.According to Brown’s report, Wright interviewed “two dozen tearful girls and their parents” and then found himself increasingly frustrated as the case slipped out of local control. He was later “blocked by state prosecutors and attacked in the media” before federal authorities took control of the investigation. The report reveals previously unreported details showing that then-Miami U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta began negotiating a secret plea deal with Epstein in 2007, a year after his arrest on felony solicitation charges. Wright sought a meeting with Acosta to learn why federal prosecutors were reluctant to bring more serious charges amid concerns about the progress of the case and questions raised by the victims’ families.Recalling that conversation, Wright said he challenged Acosta directly.“I’m here to demand that you abide by the principles in which you were sworn in.”He then pressed prosecutors further.“Who has the authority to decide whether to federally prosecute Epstein? We leave it to you. We did most of the work, and the assistant U.S. attorney told us she would normally have received a 10-year sentence on each count, whereas we might have had 100 counts, and there might have been 24 or so cooperating victims. So whose authority is this? ” he added.Acosta initially gave no reply, according to Wright. Wright said he later warned that Epstein’s powerful legal team appeared to be influencing the process.“We have received from the principal judges and [Epstein’s] Defense attorneys did a very effective job of delaying the case,” Acosta responded. The reference to “principal judges” refers to the Justice Department headquarters in Washington, which was under the jurisdiction of Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez during the Bush administration. The charges do not allege direct involvement by Bush himself. However, the report raises new questions about how decisions were made within the Justice Department during a critical period of the Epstein investigation.Although investigators identified as many as 40 potential victims, Epstein eventually reached a plea deal and admitted to a solicitation charge. He avoided more serious federal prosecution until 2019 when he was indicted on sex trafficking charges involving minors.Acosta’s handling of the case resurfaced years later when Acosta was being considered for a cabinet position in Donald Trump’s administration. According to previous reports, members of Trump’s transition team asked him: “Will the Epstein case cause problems? [for confirmation hearings]? “Acosta responded: “I was told Epstein ‘belonged to the intelligence community,’ and to leave it alone.”He was appointed labor secretary and served in Trump’s Cabinet for two years before resigning in 2019 amid renewed scrutiny of Epstein’s plea deal. The latest revelations add a new chapter to the long-running political fallout surrounding Epstein, whose connections spanned business, entertainment and politics.Trump’s own relationship with Epstein has been under scrutiny for years, although the president was never criminally charged for Epstein’s crimes.Former President Bill Clinton also had ties to Epstein through documented travel and social connections. Flight records show Clinton flew on Epstein’s private jet multiple times in 2002 and 2003 for charity work. Representatives for Clinton have insisted that he was unaware of Epstein’s criminal conduct and have repeatedly denied that he ever visited Epstein’s private Caribbean island. With Epstein’s death, many questions about his powerful connections remain unanswered, and attention continues to focus on Ghislaine Maxwell, his long-time associate and the only person convicted of sex trafficking. In 2021, she was found guilty of helping Epstein’s abuse network recruit and groom underage girls and was sentenced to 20 years in prison the following year.
