‘A reminder to those abusing state power’: Keira praises Supreme Court for anticipatory bail, says truth will prevail

New Delhi: Congress leader Pawan Khera has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to grant him anticipatory bail, saying it was a defense of “individual freedom”. The day after the order was issued, Hera reacted onIn the post, he described the remission as more than just a personal reprieve. “My bail is not only a source of personal victory and relief, but also serves as a reminder to those who abuse state power that as long as we remain a constitutional democracy, personal freedoms cannot be sacrificed for political vendetta,” he said, signing off with “Satyameva Jayate”.While granting pre-arrest bail, the Supreme Court noted that the case appeared to stem from “political competition” and stressed that the right to personal liberty under Article 21 must be protected by a high threshold for interference. A bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and AS Chandurkar said criminal proceedings must be conducted “objectively and carefully” to ensure that they are not influenced by political considerations.Kaira is accused of making allegations against the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, including claiming to own multiple passports and undisclosed foreign assets. The court noted that the charges were exchanged between the two parties and said that no custodial interrogation was required in the matter at this stage, adding that the veracity of the charges could be tested during the trial.Setting aside an earlier order of the Gauhati High Court, the bench held that its opinion was “wrong” and appeared to unfairly shift the burden to the defendants. At the same time, the court directed Hera to fully cooperate with the investigation, appear in court when required, and avoid affecting evidence or leaving the country without permission. In the post, Kaira also thanked senior Congress leaders such as Sonia Gandhi, Malikajun Khargage, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi for their support, as well as party workers who “supported me with their voices and prayers”. He added: “No matter how terrible the lie may seem, truth will prevail.”
