Russia launched a massive nighttime attack on Ukraine, launching 392 drones and 34 missiles, the Ukrainian air force said on Tuesday, one of the largest attacks in recent months.Air-raid sirens were sounded throughout the night in nearly all areas and at least five people were killed across the country, regional authorities said. Two deaths were reported in the Poltava region, and one each in Kharkiv, Kherson and Zaporozhye.According to prosecutors, a drone crashed into an electric train in Kharkiv early in the morning, killing a 61-year-old train passenger on the spot. In Kherson, a civilian died at his home after an attack, local officials said.Moldovan President Maia Sandu said the attacks also targeted critical infrastructure, with attacks on Ukraine’s energy network cutting off key power connections between Moldova and Europe. Although alternative routes are being used, she warned the situation remained “fragile” and blamed Russia for the disruption. The attack came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that intelligence showed Russia was preparing to launch a large-scale attack.Severe damage and casualties were reported in some areas. In Poltava, two people were killed and seven injured, with images showing destroyed homes and charred buildings. Zaporozhye was hit by what officials called a “large-scale combined missile-drone attack” that left one person dead and five injured.Elsewhere, Russia carried out more than 20 attacks using drones and artillery in the Dnipropetrovsk region, injuring a 76-year-old woman. In Samui, a minibus driver was injured in a drone strike.Meanwhile, Russian authorities said security agencies, including the Federal Security Service, were on high alert amid intelligence warnings of possible damaging attacks in Ukraine. Moscow also claimed that its air defense systems intercepted 55 Ukrainian drones during the night. The latest escalation highlights the intensification of cross-border attacks as the conflict continues, with both sides reporting attacks that continue to penetrate deep into each other’s territory.
