A landmark study in PLOS ONE found that women have 50% more olfactory bulbs (neurons capable of detecting odors) in their brains than men. This added biological hardware allows women to have heightened sensitivity to complex environmental odors, subtle changes in environmental chemistry, and a variety of pheromone signals that are undetectable to men.
